Once upon a time, there were eight Vasus. They were wandering the forest, and they came across the ashram of sage Vasishtha. One of the wives took a fancy to Kamadhenu, Vashishta's wish-bearing cow and asked her husband Prabhasa to steal it from Vashishta. Prabhasa then stole the cow with the help of the others who were all consequently cursed by Vashishta to be born in the world of men. Upon the Vasus appealing to Vashishta's mercy, the seven Vasus who had assisted in stealing Kamadhenu had their curse mitigated such that they would be liberated from their human birth as soon as they were born; however, Prabhasa being protagonist of the theft, was cursed to endure a longer life on the earth. The curse, however is softened to the extent that he would be one of the most illustrious men of his time. It was this Prabhasa who took birth as Devavrata (Bhishma). 2. When Bhishma lay on his death bed of arrows shot by Arjuna, he lay there contemplating & analysing his karmas of present & past lives, trying to find out which karma led to such a horrible & painful result. He had finished watching/checking 99 of his past lives when Bhagwan Shree Krishna came to him & he asked the reason for all this to the Lord. Shree Krishna told him to check 1 more past life & then he checked his past 100th life. He saw that he was a king & was once travelling some place with his troops when he saw a snake crossing their path. He ordered his soldier to throw the snake out of their path, lest he gets crushed to death. So the soldier followed the order, picked up the snake & threw it aside, but unfortunately, the snake landed in a thorny bush & was badly wounded & lay there for a lot of time in serious pain & horrible agony, till it finally succumbed to it’s injuries. Bhishma Pitamah was reaping the fruits of this karma, although he didn’t mean the snake any harm. 3. Bhisma's body couldn't be accepted by the earth because he had exceeded his stipulated time on earth. Instead of two generations, he had lived for four generations and that is the reason for non-acceptance. Bhisma had never fathered any sons. This is because of the terrible vow of remaining a virgin he had taken in his youth. So, he had not cleared the 'pitri-rin'. Among the many debts that people are born with, there is one which you have to pay by fathering children. Due to this debt, the sky couldn't accept him. So, he couldn't be accepted by the sky, nor the earth. When Arjuna was about to shoot him down with his arrows, Bhisma said "Hey partha! I can't be accepted by the earth nor by the skies. So, when you shoot me, make sure that neither of those happen." So, Arjuna expertly shot his arrows that made bhisma lie suspended on a bed of arrows. He was neither on earth nor in the sky. So, his curse worked out well too. 4. Amba cursed Bhisma in Mahabharata that in her next life she would be the reason that she could not marry his lover King Shalvya because Bhishma defeated her lover King Shalvya in her swamvara of Kashi and she became stubborn to marry Bhishma to break his pratigya as he won her in swamvara. Bhisma preached all the dharmas, mainly Varnasrama Dharma which includes Bhramana dharma, Kshatritya dharma, Vaisya dharma, Sudra dharma. Then he taught Yudhistir the importance of a king in preserving the dharma in the kingdom based on his life long experience. He also preaches Shtri dharma. Hindhu religion respects women and firmly believes the happiness of the women in the nation decides the prosperity of the nation. Finally, most importantly he preaches Moksha dharma/Bhagavatha dharma on the request of Yudhistara. He says the One guy standing with us now, Sri Krishna is parmatma and chanting his names is the one and only possible way to attain moksha in kali yuga.
