Certain procedures are adopted for prayer, for daily activity, customs, way of life and life style. and there is always priests, gurus , guide who preaches their respective religion, who prescribe set of religious rules. All religion that exists in the face of earth has own set of rules and regulations. Spirituality is getting in touch with oneself for attainment of inner peace or to get in touch with the one supreme, The ultimate, the param hamsa, param aatma which is above any religion. Spirituality has no set of rules and regulation, no god men/women. Spirituality is awekening oneself, realising own karma and its effect, living and being at peace with oneself. Don't mistake spirituality with cult pratices. A religious person can be spiritual and a spiritual person can also be religion. Now comes materialism (we know what materialism-is) - religions teaches us materialism is not good for inner peace, materialism is main cause of jelousy, hatered etc..etc..followed by crime. One must learn to donate, to give etc...(before donating or giving, one must earn it first). Spirituality teaches us materialistic goals are important part of survival. There is no harm is being materialistic, it is okay to like money (not be crazy), to have stuffs more than what is needed for survival. Because it is only than we can donate give to the needy. Spirituality is accepting material things, enjoying what earth, nature has to offer to us and yet not being attached to it. Think for once- we visit religions places (temples/churches/mosques etc..) offer prayer for what? What do we ask for? Either we ask for money- material things or peace of mind- right. But a spiritual person does not even visit religions places- some are atheist as well but don't speak ill of any religion or God, and they know they have to work for money and material things for survival and also to enjoy this lovely life we have got. and from whatever they get , they donate some. They take time to seek for the ultimate, the supreme, the param aatma, to be with oneself and have inner peace. They are well aware- material things cannot be forwarded to another life but good karma can. A religions person can have begoted beliefs but a spiritual person has neutral beliefs. A spiritual person is not attached to anything yet works for everything. Has respect for everyone and everything. A religious person is attached to his/her beliefs system. Cannot think of accepting other religion beliefs and views.- if this is not so than that person is not religious but spiritual.
